We are up and running!
A new school year has begun and you have met your students and their parents, gotten to know the new faculty on campus and learned what your budget actually is. Now is the time to begin the small steps to create successful sight readers. It begins before looking at the notes on the page. This week use hand signs (yourself and your students) as you sing a major scale daily. Sing and sign with the students for a few days. Then have them do it alone (even without the piano) to see if they have the concept of pitch moving up and down (this will be shown in the handling movement up and down in front of the body core). Quick grade for the grade book. Do they know their hand signs? Can they match pitch on a major scale? (You may have to adjust the key to help those changing voices find where they can match pitch.) This falls under the TEKS category of “Foundations: Music Literacy” and “Creative Expression”.
Keep a song in your heart and the world will be a better place,
